What are Botox® & Jeuveau®?

Botox® is probably a familiar brand name to anyone that has experienced or looked into cosmetic surgery and enhancements. More formally known as botulinum toxin, this is a naturally occurring chemical that is harvested from a type of spore, known as clostridium botulinum.

As the name botulinum toxin implies, in its raw, unprocessed form, Botox® is a neurotoxin for humans. It can paralyze muscles, and in large amounts can be harmful to humans. Botulism, for example, is the result of too much toxin in the system paralyzing other muscles and gradually working its way to paralyzing the breathing muscles.

Botox®, however, has now been safely used for cosmetic treatment and sold in the medical market for many decades. As a result of such a long time on the market, the patents that formally allowed only the Botox® Cosmetic company to use the formulation have expired. Now, much like medicines such as Aspirin® and Tylenol®, these formulations are available to other companies to use, and they can charge whatever prices they like to remain competitive.

As a result, while Botox® is still available as a treatment option, other competing products, such as Jeuveaux® use the same formula, for identical results.

How Do Botox® & Jeuveau® Work?

When we are young, our skin is elastic but tight. It means that if we do something like frown, or spend the day with our forehead creased in worry, or even crinkle our eyes and laugh a lot, the lines we form on our face during these activities smooth out and return to a “neutral” position. As we age, however, this elasticity is lost, and when we laugh or worry, these lines may become permanent features on our face, like the wrinkles that form as we get older. The application of treatments like Botox® and Jeuveau® apply small, precisely controlled amounts of botulinum toxin into specific muscle areas to relax and smooth out these lines. This restores a more youthful, and in some cases, more relaxed, cheerful appearance, as the crow’s feet around eyes, worry lines on the forehead, and other parts of the face relax and flatten.

The Treatment

Fortunately, unlike more extensive procedures such as a facelift, administering Botox® or Jeuveau® is not a surgical process. A visit to a clinic, with an experienced medical specialist, means precisely controlled injections into the targeted areas of concern can be done in a single visit, with no general anesthesia or hospitalization recovery required.

The aftereffects of the treatment are quite mild. There may be some redness or minor bleeding from the point of the injection, but the recovery period is very fast. These injections are, however, temporary. The effect of Botox® or Jeuveau® generally lasts 3-4 months, at which point another visit is required to maintain a smooth appearance.

Consult An Expert

It is important to ensure you visit an experienced medical professional to get an in-depth consultation. Some lines on your face you may be concerned about might require a facelift. Other times, you may think a facelift is necessary when a doctor can recommend a Botox® or Jeuveau® injection regimen instead. But perhaps the most important reason to see an expert is good results. “Frozen face” is a common example of improperly administered injections, where a person laughs or shows strong emotion, but the facial muscles are too paralyzed to display the reaction. An experienced medical specialist avoids this.
